About Us
Eating Close to Home: A Guide to Local, Seasonal Sustenance in the Pacific Northwest, is local author Elin England’s newly published collection of recipes and cooking tips to help readers re-localize their eating. The book is a collective effort that pulls together recipes and resources from local-area food producers, restaurants, non-profits and individuals.
Organized by season, Eating Close to Home offers a generous bounty of simple, tasty ideas for people on the go who are juggling work schedules, kids’ activities and tight budgets.
Virtually all of the ingredients in England’s collection of recipes can be found at local farmer’s markets and grocery outlets. The book provides a handy chart of which foods are available at what time of year.
“Knowing which nutritious foods are locally available in the Pacific Northwest during each season, and how to prepare them, makes it easy to align your eating habits with the seasons and your values,” England says.
In addition to providing ideas on how to cook with less commonly used vegetables, the book illustrates the many benefits of eating from your local food shed. Among them: reducing your carbon footprint, greater nutritional value, and strengthening your local economy.
Filled with delicious recipes covering appetizers to desserts, Eating Close to Home is available in local bookstores and through on-line retailers. A portion of the proceeds goes to benefit the Willamette Farm and Food Coalition.
236 pages, 141 recipes. Paperback, with color cover with black and white illustrations.
